“This is the best acting in the world; Chris Evans pretending he doesn’t like dogs. Give that man an Oscar, because Chris loves dogs and dogs love Chris.” - Rian Johnson, Knives Out Theater Commentary

Also, you can tell these dogs are just so happy and having a good time. They are doing their acting jobs and are very good dogs.

Though, from my personal experience of dog people vs not dog people Evans actually 100% fails at not looking like a dog people, despite resisting what I know is his entire body urging him to crouch down and give scritches and praise.

Because that calm measured movement, turning away from the dogs, open hands up but not over face or defensive signalling no attention coming combined with gentle knee to stop the jump up and move them out of the way is absolutely an experienced dog person move.

Most people who are not dog people tense up and either freeze or move erratically and adopt a defensive hand/arm position, which yes often ends up has hands up - but in a position which is more likely to encourage a dog to jump up be more interested in “what do you have? is this game time?” than anything else.

But he’s moving, and moving them out of the way in what is a very, very effective/efficient dog person manner XD

In fact, if you are not a dog person I’d recommend looking at what he’s doing - more in the 2nd + 3rd gif than first which is a little more convincingly not dog person - here and trying to adopt it next time you’re approached by a dog who is far more interested in you than you are in it.

Namely:

  1. Move with a deliberate not fast but steady speed
  2. Turn your body to the side away from the dog and tell it to stop or go away in a stern voice
  3. If it tries to jump up either turning away and/or using your knee to push it away from you then/while turning away (this is not a kick it’s just a pushing motion with your knee)
  4. The same knee/thigh/shin (depending on dog size) pushing action works really well sort of obliquely on the dog’s side to get them to move/ let you through if they are in your way (I do this all the time with Riker when he decides to stand exactly right in my way, though usually just saying “excuse me” works with him, or when he isn’t paying attention on leash and I’m turning to the left and he ends up in front of me, just nudge him and he’s all “oh right, okay” XD)

These tips are mostly for dogs that are friendly or overly enthusiastic (and even if you ARE dog people if a dog jumps up I highly encourage you to at least turn away and not give them attention until they’re not jumping up… like sometimes the hardest thing to get to stick is the “don’t jump up on strangers” because so many people on the dog trail give your dog attention for doing it and no amount of you being consistent about the no jumping up training is going to override that strangers often reward it and while YOU don’t mind there are a LOT of people who will.)

However, If they’re actually aggressive it’s more tricky but the advice of calm motion and standing ground if charged + knee is still a good way to keep them away from you/prevent the jump up and then you don’t even have to worry about if you read the charge as aggressive when it

If a dog is actually aggressive and trying to bite you using whatever you have to hand that isn’t your own body parts to keep it at a distance from you is best, and other than that if you’ve heard bear defense advice it’s pretty much the same for dogs.
